APL Accreditation of Prior Learning is a process which enables people to gain certificates for their past achievement, often outside the formal education system in work, leisure or community activities.

Examining Bodies and Qualifications
BA/BSc/BEd   Bachelor of Arts / Science / Education. Most common 'first' degrees, usually taking three years full-time, four to six years part-time.
BTEC   Business and Technology Education Council
CACHE   Council for Awards in Children's Care and Education
C&G   City and Guilds
CLAIT   Computer Literacy and Information Technology (an award offered by the Royal Society of Arts)
CNAA   Council for National Academic Awards
DipHE   Diploma in Higher Education. Usually awarded after two years of full-time study or its part-time equivalent; can lead on to a degree or teaching qualification.
D DipSW   Diploma in Social Work A level Advanced level. The conventional route to higher education.
GCSE   General Certificate of Secondary Education. Qualification which combined and replaced CSE and O level in 1988.
GNVQ   General National Vocational Qualification
HNC/D   Higher National Certificate / Diploma
HEQC   Higher Educational Quality Council
LCCI   London Chamber of Commerce and Industry
MA/MSc/MEd   Master of Arts / Science / Education. Postgraduate qualifications, usually taking one year of full-time study. Part-time study over a long period of time may also be available.
NC/D   National Certificate / Diploma
NEBSM   National Examining Board for Supervisory Management
NNEB   National Nursery Examination Board
NVQ   National Vocation Qualification
PGCE   Postgraduate Certificate in Education
QTS   Qualified Teacher Status
RSA   Royal Society of Arts. Some business studies courses lead to RSA certificates.
SCE   Scottish Certificate of Education. Standard Ordinary Grade is generally considered equivalent to GCSE. The Higher Grade examination serves as an entry to higher education in Scotland.
